CompTIA: IT Industry Making Strong Progress on Reducing Energy

A new study by CompTIA, a non-profit trade association for the IT industry, shows a sizeable reduction in the annual CO2 emissions associated with information technology (IT) equipment is evidence of the IT industry’s commitment to a cleaner and greener world.
The study released by the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI) shows that the IT sector has reduced CO2 emission associated with IT equipment by more than 32 million metric tons worldwide since 2007.
CompTIA is a sponsor of CSCI, a global industry coalition formed in 2007 to reduce the environmental impact of new IT equipment through energy efficiency.
“The results of this study indicate that the industry is on the right track,” said Todd Thibodeaux, president and CEO, CompTIA. “Members remain committed and dedicated to CSCI’s energy efficiency mission.”
The benchmark study was conducted by Natural Logic to assess progress of the CSCI’s goal of reducing annual CO2 emissions from the IT sector by 54 million metric tons by June 2011. The research shows that annual CO2 emissions from IT equipment have decreased by 32 million to 36 million metric tons worldwide since 2007. This amount is equivalent to taking nine coal-fired power plants offline and is equal to more than $2 billion in annual energy savings.
Additionally, the study indicates that the IT sector is on target to achieve CSCI’s reduction goal by the end of its 2010 fiscal year in June 2011.
As part of this expansion, commercial and residential routers and switches, commercial WLAN, and security and access devices will be incorporated into the organization’s environmental mission, with the goal of reducing annual CO2 emissions by an additional 38 million metric tons by 2015

In France, the enshrined notion of egalite has resulted in a culture of casual racism and intolerance of difference. Witness the ghetto-like banlieues and suppression of languages other than French.
It is a fascistic response to make laws about what people can wear in public, bar obvious common decency, and is as ridiculous as the reactionary and oppressive practices that the West deplores in some Muslim countries.
Let us be careful not to let our own traditional egalitarian sensibilities become dictated conformity.
I agree there is no place for the full burqa and the chador in the West when so many activities (banking, flight check-in, etc.) depend on face identification, aside from the fact it is not particularly Koranic nor practical (imagine the rigmarole in the doctor’s office). It oppresses women. But this isn’t for the state to decide.
The khimar or hijab head scarf, however, is a harmless expression of modesty, and is no different to a nun’s veil, any hat, or Hilda Ogden’s covering of her hair curlers – we must be careful about the use of terms, and almost certainly should apologise to Islam for the abomination of Sex and the City 2.
Democracy is the right to choose for oneself, and if a woman chooses to enshroud herself in an enveloping sack, that is her business

Dear : I recently got my car detailed at a local place and then gasped at the chemical fumes when I got inside. Are there green detailers out there, or products that I could use myself to keep my vehicle clean and my family out of harm’s way? – David Berkowitz, Newton, Mass.
Traditionally, auto detailing has employed a range of not-so- green-friendly products such as ammonia, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nonphenolethoxolates (NPEs), abrasive detergents and chemical-based leather, vinyl, fabric and carpet treatments. Inside the car, they can off-gas harsh airborne pollutants; when washed down storm drains they can wreak havoc on public water supplies.
Unfortunately, while environmental awareness is beginning to crop up among auto detailing services (online discussion boards are full of posts from professional detailers sharing their tips for greener, more effective products and formulations), finding a green detailing service isn’t very easy just yet, so doing it yourself might be the only way to ensure that the environment and your health are spared chemical insult.
There are green detailing products and kits out there, easily found through an Internet search.
Two leading suppliers are Laura Klein’s Green Cleaning and Mean Green. These companies, among others, specialize in degreasers, dashboard dressings, tire cleaners, spot removers and other products made with natural, biodegradable water- and plant-based substances (including coconut, palm, citrus, corn and soy), combined and concentrated to be as effective as or better than their chemical- laden counterparts.
Another way to be green and clean at the same time is to choose wash and wax products that don’t contain harsh chemical surfactants – and as such don’t require water-wasting, polluting rinses. No-Wet Waterless Concepts and Optimum Polymer Technologies are two leading manufacturers for such goods.
Do-it-yourselfers should be careful not to dump wastewater into nearby storm drains not intended to carry toxic run-off. Most reputable car wash businesses go to great lengths to make sure the water, soaps, oils and other dirt from your car don’t end up polluting groundwater, rivers and streams, and so should you.
If you clean your car in your own driveway or garage, try to collect any run-off and dispose of it into a drain or toilet that will send it through the sewage treatment system, not into the curbside storm run-off drain that may well lead directly to a local water body or shoreline.
While finding a green detailer may not be easy, you can start by asking those operators in your region if they currently use environmentally friendly products and/or processes. If not, ask them if they would be amenable to greening up their operations for the sake of attracting customers like you.

Office equipment currently accounts for 15 per cent of energy consumption in the UK.
It’s an alarming figure – but hardly surprising, given that a typical office is full of a electrical equipment such as computers, printers, lighting, heating, vending machines and hot water.
However, companies can now pinpoint which electrical items are using most energy – and costing most money – thanks to a Bristol- based business.
Monitor My Workspace was launched recently with the aim of enabling businesses to take control of their energy usage, and in doing so reduce their bills and carbon footprint.
“Many energy monitoring devices are aimed at the domestic market, and are not well-suited for large premises,” explains director Mike Matthews.
“But business have a great deal to gain from monitoring their energy usage. The Carbon Trust has estimated office equipment is responsible for 15 per cent of total energy consumption in the UK – but 60 per cent of this is being used by equipment and appliances left on standby, or switched on when they are not in use.”
The team managing Monitor My Workspace is the same team of technical experts behind Fulcrum Projects Ltd, the Bristol-based specialists in lighting, power and project solutions, which was responsible for power distribution for last years’ G20 summit in London.
Mike says Monitor My Workspace was set it up in response growing demand from energy conscious businesses and homes.
“An increasing number of companies are looking into ways of reducing their carbon footprint and demanding greater control over their energy useage. Many bigger businesses are targeted by the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), meaning they have to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions, and smaller businesses want to do their bit to make sure they’re not wasting energy and money” he explains.
“Monitoring energy output is an effective way to save money at a time when overheads are rising and business budgets are under pressure, while making sure you do your bit for the environment.”
Monitor My Workspace has an online shop, which provides a selection of energy monitoring systems at a range of prices, which can identify which pieces of equipment are using excessive energy and where savings can be made.
Brands include Owl, Current Cost and Alert Me. The online shop also sells the new Enistic system, which Isabel Duckworth, marketing manager for Monitor My Workspace, describes as being “a scaleable system, perfect for small or large organisations alike, offering penny perfect meter readings when fully set up.”
Mike presses some of his keys on his computer, and graphs from the Enistic system comes on to the screen, and they can be seen auditing the power presently being used in the office. Isabel explains that this information can be collected into variable reports that can be daily, weekly, or monthly at the touch of a button to show energy use for an individual, department or for the entire building.
“This makes it possible to judge which appliances need to be programmed to be switched on or off at certain times to save energy,” she says.
Mike says research has shown that energy information is also one of the best approaches to carbon reduction.
The Enistic system provides a typical saving of between 21 and 27 per cent for companies that use it, so the initial investment in the equipment is usually repaid in about a year.

Years of backpacking in Third World countries introduced Michael Newberg, 53, to plenty of meddlesome insects. None, though, compared to the bedbugs that infested his suburban Denver home last year after a stay in a hotel in Estes Park, Colo.
“My stepdaughter had to throw away all of her stuffed animals,” said Newberg. “They will go inside the animals. How do you tell an 8- year-old that her life with stuffed animals is gone? Our expenses (to rid the house of bedbugs) are pushing $3,000 to $4,000.”
Newberg hired pest-control specialists to fumigate the house – three times. All of his clothing, and even the drapes, had to be laundered.
Bedbugs, like vampires, live to suck blood. But wooden stakes kill vampires, and garlic repels them. Compared with bedbugs, vampires aren’t so tough.
“We’ve had people say, ‘We know they are in this apartment complex; can we just shut it down for a year?’
” said Mathew Camper, a research associate at Colorado State University who studies bedbugs. “The answer is no. They go into hibernation and they just wait.”
Hotel rooms – from low-budget affairs to suites in luxury resorts, as well as rental condos and apartments at ski resorts – have served as vectors for the spread of bedbugs. Bedbugs attach themselves to patrons while they sleep. Hotel guests then bring the pests home. Soon, the house is swarming with them.
Cleaning won’t affect them. Laundering clothes will get rid of some, but the house undoubtedly contains more. Even spraying every room with powerful poisons won’t always do the trick.
Bedbugs are back, and it seems they may be here to stay.
Anywhere people sleep can become a breeding ground for the nasty little insects.
About half of the people who hire Gary West to kill their bedbugs believe they got their infestation from a hotel. You can also get bedbugs from a neighbor, a plane flight, even used furniture.
Last year West, of Boulder, spent more than $100,000 on bedbug- killing equipment after his wife, who works in real estate, kept dealing with apartment buildings suffering from bedbug infestations.
Now, the former engineer is a busy man.
His equipment pushes the temperatures inside rooms to 130 degrees, which is about 10 degrees more than is needed to kill bedbugs. Treatment takes all day, typically, and costs $25 a square foot, with a minimum charge of $1,200.
He finds them everywhere. Most commonly, though, they nest near beds because the insects use carbon dioxide to find their prey – and bedrooms are carbon-dioxide machines in the evenings, while people sleep. One prime location are pictures hanging on the wall behind a bed.
“They like to harbor, to avoid light,” he said. “It’s a nice space to hide. They hide near their food source. The only thing they ingest is blood.”
Another favorite spot for bedbugs, he said, is bedroom computers.
“People surf the Net on their computers in bed,” he said. “The computer becomes one of the warmer things. And the bugs love it, they go to the computer looking for food, and they climb into the keyboards.”
For Newberg, the first evidence of bedbugs occurred several days after he and his wife spent a night at a hotel. The hotel denied that its room was the source, he said. Wherever they came from, getting rid of the bugs was inconvenient, unpleasant and expensive for the family. The bugs bit Newberg, but he wasn’t deeply affected

Spring flowering bulbs should be planted at a depth of two to three times their height, which for most of the larger bulbs such as tulips and daffodils that equates to a planting depth of approximately 8 inches deep. Smaller bulbs will be planted at a depth of three to four inches deep. The planting depth is measured form the base of the bulb, resting on the soil in the hole or trench. For summer flowering bulbs you should consult the specifications on the packaging as summer bulbs have substantially different planting depth requirements.
Daffodils, hyacinths and tulips must be planted with the root plate pointing downward and the top or nose of the bulb pointing upward.
It is recommended that to obtain the best planting that you till the entire bed to loosen the soil to the correct depth.
